The Importance of Health and Safety Training
Why is general health and safety training important?
Many people are needlessly injured or suffer long term health problems at work each year. Businesses have a duty of care to protect both employees and non-employees from risk of harm while at work. Besides being a legal requirement it makes good economic sense to ensure that you and other people are not injured or put in danger through lack of information, instruction and training.
The hidden costs of an injury are:
- Loss of a valuable employee while off sick (sick pay, additional staff/overtime to cover absence)
- Possible insurance liability claim against the business (could result in higher insurance premiums)
- Fines imposed by a magistrate or Crown Court as a result of a prosecution by HSE
- Resulting bad publicity.
